Summer Night at the Nationals Game!

Dear Nationals Fans,

As a native of Turkey and an immigrant to the U.S., I have always been intrigued by American sports especially the baseball. A recent GW class visit to the Washington Nationals game was a first for me. Since I have never experienced of being a spectator at a baseball game, going to a game was never been on my bucket list.

Washingtonians can regularly be seen around the district in their baseball caps and t-shirts proudly displaying the Washington Nationals logo, nevertheless this experience that they were having was somewhat distant and foreign to me.  Perhaps, I was waiting for a special invitation to attend.

How do one define the baseball ballpark experience?  Is baseball game just an American sport?  Is it an American experience?  The answer is not so clear…even Japanese has their own baseball league nowadays.

Attending a baseball game was an entertainment for me.  Having a cold draft beer while hearing upbeat music was certainly an entertainment on a hot summer night at the ballpark. The ballpark certainly got my attention by linking the entertainment with the game. By doing so, what I thought was a boring sport certainly became alive and fun experience for me.  I now can see why almost all Hollywood romantic comedies have a scene at a ballpark.  It is always a pleasant experience.  There is something to experience for everyone from families with children to people on dates or singles just looking to get hitched.

At the end, I find myself part of a greater community.  A community that I am part of.  So, I walked to the Washington Nationals store on my way out to get my own t-shirt with a logo to proudly tell the world that I am a Washington Nationals fan.
F.K.
