Duality at the Hirschhorn......
We took a journey to the Hirschhorn Museum...And explored the duality of Identity and sense of place. One thing that resonates is the role of the viewer navigating the space within the Shirin Neshat exhibit and the Dan Flavin exhibit.
In the Shirin Neshat Exhibit, the viewer rotates counterclockwise through the exhibition space as if reading the Koran - from right to left.
The exhibit tackles many issues regarding the sense of self and
Identity within the west as well as Iranian identity back home. Through the addition of Persian writing to Neshats photographs, the artist invites the viewer into the space to closely examine the details of the photo. In doing so, the viewer participates in the dialogue that Neshat is having with the viewer.
In the Dan Flavin exhibit - the viewer is actually invited to walk through and experience colour.
Modern art is a contentious issue, but if you approach with an open mind, you can actually experience something truly amazing. You may not understand it, but that may not necessarily be the point. The point is the experience and to participate within the greater dialogue that is post-modern art.
